The basic minimum qualification that is required to become a registered nurse is the associate degree in nursing.
A diploma in the field will also give a hopeful nursing student an edge.
An alternative option is to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.
This can be further boosted with a Master of Science in nursing in the same which takes two years to complete.
Individuals who have done associate degrees can also work up their way to up to the same.
These are all programs that take about two to four to complete depending on the institution and other factors.
In the theory work different fields are combined such as psychology, behavioural sciences, anatomy and physiology, nutrition and chemistry.
Once the academic qualifications have been attained, it is then time to pursue some nursing experience.
This experience has to be gathered in medical facilities like hospitals, hospices, clinics and other related areas where there is plenty of hands on work.
In these facilities the student is then supervised by an experienced practitioner of the same.
The purpose of these training is to give nursing student firsthand experience of the career that they have chosen and guarantee them the qualification to becoming a registered nurse.
The training shows the student the tools of the trade as well the different procedures and surgical operations.
The training is expected to take a given period calculated in hours and once this section is completed the student qualifies for a state licence.
To become registered as nurse, a student takes a final exam governed by different bodies depending on the nation or state giving the exam.
The exam comprises of questions that total up to over two hundred questions that are tested in different levels.
The more correct answers that a student has the more they are able to progress faster and the closer they are to achieving their goal to become licensed.
Failure to pass such tests results in stagnation until the correct amount of right questions quota is filled.
However, this in itself does not end the learning period of a nurse.
It is a requirement that there some level of continuous training on their part.
This ensures that the nursing fraternity is up to date with the developments in the medical field.
Such training attended or research done gets the nurse some points on their score card.
Besides the academic qualifications other tests and health screenings may be carried out the licensing state.
The tests aim to protect the well being of the patients.
