How to Graph Lines Using Intercepts With a Calculator
- 1). Replace "x" with 0 in the equation of the line and compute the value of y. For example, if the line to be plotted is x -- 2y = 2, the result is y = -1. This is the y-intercept. The point formed in this case has the coordinates (0,-1).
- 2). Repeat Step 1 for y = 0, calculating the value of the x-intercept. In this case, the x-intercept is (2,0).
- 3). Locate the "Draw" menu on the graphing calculator used for plotting lines.
- 4). Access the "Line" function of the Draw menu. In most cases, the only parameters required are the x and y coordinates of the two points just obtained.
- 5). Input the parameters into the memory of the calculator. The example above produces Line (0, -1, 2, 0).
- 6). Press the button labeled "Enter" or "Graph" and the calculator will automatically produce the graph of the line.
