How to Install Tile on DITRA
- 1). Fill the cavities in the Schluter DITRA with the unmodified thinset mortar over a manageable installation area. Comb an additional layer of this mortar over the DITRA as if you were installing tile over any other substrate.
- 2). Press a tile into the thinset mortar and immediately remove it. Inspect the back for adequate mortar coverage, and adjust the amount of mortar you are using appropriately, backbuttering the tiles with additional material if needed.
- 3). Lay the tile over the DITRA, continuing to fill the cavities, and add mortar over the substrate as needed. Ensure that you are using spacers to separate the tiles, creating even grout joints. Also check that your tiles are level with each other. Continue until you have tiled the entire area.
- 4). Allow the tile installation to dry at least 24 hours before proceeding. Remove the spacers and any excess mortar that may have been pushed into the grout joints.
- 5). Grout the tile by making diagonal passes over the grout joints using the float. Press as much grout as you can into each joint to ensure stability in the installation. Remove any large amounts of excess grout from the surface of the tile using a clean, damp sponge.
- 6). Wait 15-30 minutes after finishing the grout joints. A film, also known as grout haze should form on the tiles. Scrub this from the tile surface with a sponge and clean water. You will have to repeat this every 15 minutes until haze no longer forms on the tiles.
- 7). Allow the grout to cure, then seal the installation using a grout and tile sealer. Spray or roll it on according to the manufacturer's instructions.
