Features of Biometric Devices
- One of the most popular biometric features is fingerprint identification. An individual chooses one particular finger and registers his print into a database. The fingerprint can then be used on other biometric fingerprint-enabled hardware. A person may be able to gain access by merely touching a reader once. In other instances, they may need to have the fingerprint read multiple times before being officially recognized.
- A variety of software can be used to obtain the individual features of someone's face. Those facial characteristics are then associated with a certain person and stored in a database. To gain access to something restricted, a person's face is scanned and must match the characteristics already on record. Issues can arise when the initial image is taken in poor lighting or if something obstructs the person's face.
- An image is initially taken of the iris of a person's eye. The specific structure of a person's iris is then analyzed and kept in a database as identification. An individual can later be recognized by having that particular eye scanned against what is on file in the database. Quality of the initial eye image is imperative to how well this actually works.
- The individual pattern of a person's speech is used to obtain speaker recognition. The software used measures things such as an individual's voice pitch and intensity. Once stored in the database, a person's voice can later be recognized by either a text-dependent or text-independent method. The dependent method means the system recognizes a prerecorded phrase. Independent means that no such phrase is required for access; it independently recognizes the vocal pattern on file.
