    • Children should learn how to spell the names of each state, and games are a great way to reinforce the concept. You should have a number of games for spelling states on hand so that you can play them at a moment's notice. Different children respond better to different types of spelling games, so knowing several will help you keep everyone happy.

    Jumble

    • Jumble is a basic spelling game that you can use to teach the states. Simply mix up the letters and students must rearrange the letters to spell out the name of a state.

    Around the World

    • In a school setting, start with one student standing behind another at his desk. The two students must compete to spell a state first. The winner proceeds to the next student's desk. The goal of the game is to compete and win against all students in the class.

    Spelling Bee

    • Hold a spelling bee using just the names of the states. If a child makes a mistake, she is "out."

    Tic Tac Toe

    • Before a child can place her X or O on the board, she must spell out one of the states. If she makes a mistake, she loses her turn.

    Spelling Race

    • Two children compete to write down a state's spelling. You can do this as two teams, taking turns and adding points to the winning side.

    Team Spelling

    • Children must work together to spell the states. Start with one child who must say the first letter. The next child says the second letter and so on. You can do this in pairs or with a whole class or group.
