Toilet Won't Drain
- 1). Lift the back cover off of the toilet tank and set it in a safe location where it will not get broken. Opening the toilet tank allows you to test the toilet drainage without fear of an overflow.
- 2). Lift both the lid of the toilet and the toilet seat.
- 3). Hold a funnel cup plunger under a stream of hot, running water for 30 to 60 seconds to make it more flexible. Plungers work more effectively if they are flexible rather than cold and stiff. A funnel cup plunger has a short, tube-like projection on the end of it which helps to create a stronger suction.
- 4). Insert the plunger into the toilet and position it directly over the toilet drain hole.
- 5). Place both hands on the stick of the plunger and push down and pull up three or four times in a rapid pattern. Set the plunger aside.
- 6). Place one hand near the back of the toilet tank and use the other hand to flush the toilet. Watch the water level carefully. The toilet should drain out. If the toilet is still clogged, press down on the round flapper in the toilet tank to stop the water in the bowl from overflowing. Reinsert the plunger into and plunge again to remove the clog.
