- An ultramobile PC is easier to travel with than a desktop computer.mobile office image by Pali A from Fotolia.com
An ultramobile PC (UMPC) is a small, personal computer first developed by Microsoft, Intel, and Samsung in 2006. These small computers use usually use Microsoft's copyrighted Tablet PC operating system and have a screen that is usually 5 to 7 inches long diagonally. The computer uses a pen or stylus to navigate a touchscreen centered between sets of keyboard buttons. - UMPCs use windows to display information like other computers. Because the screen of an UMPC is so small, however, sometimes pieces of the window can disappear. For example, the Wibrain B1 UMPC has a touchscreen that's only 4.8 inches long diagonally. Sometimes the part of the window that disappears is the dialogue button, such as "Next" or "Continue." If this happens, you have no way to press the button except to escape out of the window and start over. To correct this display problem, if you download the free utility UMPCScrollbar, the program will detect when a dialogue box has moved beyond the borders of the window and pop up a scroll bar, so that you can scroll to it.
- An UMPC is not a cheap device. As of 2010, the Wibrain B1 UMPC, for example, retails between $650 to $750, depending on the its features. Because the UMPC is so small, many people travel with it. However, travel can damage the UMPC either by dropping or rough handling. Just like protecting an expensive camera, putting the device in a hard case will help protect it from damaging and unexpected impacts.
- UMPCs are often taken on trips, whether for pleasure or business. Downloading an ebook before the trip can put the device to use, even when your in an airplane and can't use the internet. Project Gutenberg is an online library that lets you choose from a collection of over 30,000 free out-of-copyright books. In addition, the Open Library offers another huge inventory of full-text resources, including books, essays, and plays. This resource has over 1.2 million texts to download for free.
