The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released a new guide that will provide clergy with the basic information and skills needed to help addicted individuals and their families.

"Core Competencies for Clergy and Other Pastoral Ministers in Addressing Alcohol and Drug Dependence and the Impact on Family Members" was developed through a partnership of SAMHSA, the National Association for Children of Alcoholics and the Johnson Institute.

"This is the beginning of a long process that will result in educational segments being incorporated into seminary courses that will help train clergy and pastoral ministers across denominations," SAMHSA Administrator Charles G. Curie said. "The people that SAMHSA serves are the very same people that turn to clergy every day ? the homeless, the drug-addicted men and women, the teens who abuse alcohol, and the children who are affected by all of this."

Core Competencies for Clergy and Other Pastoral Ministers in Addressing Alcohol and Drug Dependence and the Impact on Family Members was released at SAMHSA's Faith-Based and Community Summit that highlighted programs developed by faith-based and community organizations in crime prevention, substance abuse prevention and treatment and mental health services.

The guide summarizes the core competencies recommended for adoption in clerical training and continuing education. The American Association of Pastoral Counselors has committed to use this information in their pastoral counseling and credentialing programs.

H. Westley Clark, M.D., J.D., M.P.H., director of SAMHSA's Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, said: "Many times clergy are the first to know when drug abuse and alcoholism are a problem in families. These core competencies will give clergy an effective tool to help address drug abuse and alcoholism issues before families and individuals are in a crisis."

Attending the one-day conference are representatives from mental health and substance abuse organizations, crisis centers, advocates, suicide survivors, law enforcement, faith-based and community organizations. The meeting is held jointly with the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA).

Copies of the publication can be ordered online at www.samhsa.gov or from SAMHSA's National Clearinghouse on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Information at 1-800-729-6686.
