Making a Piggy Bank With Clay

    Making the Body

    • Create the body of the clay piggy bank using any air-drying clay. Roll out the clay into strings that are about the width of your finger. Wrap the first around so the ends are touching to form a circle. Use your hands to turn it around, smashing it flat as you go. You can mold it around something circular if you are having trouble. Keep going till you have a circle that is flat on all sides. Take a second string and add it around the edges of one end of your circle. Flatten this string out as well. Continue until the body of the pig is the size you want your bank to be. Then fold the ends closed and smooth them out with your fingers.

    Creating the Features

    • Take a large chunk of clay and roll it into a large ball with your hands. This will be the head of the piggy bank. Mold it into the body of the piggy bank and use a plastic knife to carve the face on. For the legs, use squares of clay. Make sure they are thick so they will support the piggy bank's weight. Roll a small piece of clay out into a string, and then curl it around your finger and add it to the piggy bank as its tail. Carve out a slot in the top of the bank and a hole in the bottom for a cork.

    Finishing the Piggy Bank

    • Once you have finished creating the piggy bank, set it aside and let it dry according to the directions on the package. Once it is completely dry and hardened, push a cork into the bottom to keep coins from falling out. Next, use acrylic paints to decorate your piggy bank. You can paint the entire thing, or choose to leave it as it is. If your clay is dirty, you can use a slightly damp paper towel to clean it. Don't use too much water or your piggy bank may fall apart. Drop coins into the bank, and when you want to retrieve them, just unplug the cork. If you want to create a more traditional piggy bank, don't add the hole in the bottom and once the piggy bank is full, smash it.
