So, you've been planning to get away from home for months on end and now the time is almost upon you! But there are a few things that you need to make sure you have sorted out before you just pack your bags and go. Firstly, you need to make sure that you have all your travel documents accounted for and ready then you need to ensure you have all your reservations booked and sorted; and last but certainly not least, you need to purchase a good insurance policy.

While the first two are pretty certain to be reasonably easy to sort out, it's the third that can slip your mind. But don't let it. Getting covered for your holiday is something that is completely necessary for the peace of mind it can give you. However, when you are looking into getting an insurance policy for your trip, there are several that you should consider - depending on the type of travel you are doing and where you are going.

Type of travel

Many of us go on a holiday to somewhere warm, culturally significant, or both, and getting an insurance policy to cover that is pretty simple and straightforward; however it gets a bit more complicated if you are travelling for sport - whether professionally or for leisure. Sporting institutions, like the major leagues of football and rugby, will have everything sorted out for their players, and likewise so do many of the smaller level teams for more obscure sports. But amateur sports enthusiasts need to look into getting coverage based on the level of the sport's danger. There is, after all, no point in getting coverage suited for a stunt skydiver when you just want to do a bit of white water rafting and the like. That being said, you can often get group rates if you are going with a team as part of team event. And you can usually get specific coverage for a sport, ensuring the very best and most appropriate policy.

Destination

While you may want just a basic travel insurance policy if you are going somewhere in the United Kingdom, you may want to look into getting more specific and comprehensive coverage if you are planning to go somewhere outwith the UK - especially exotic locations. Although traditional policies often cover things like medical, if you are from the UK, and travelling within it, you are already covered! So use your money wisely and get a policy that mainly covers loss of luggage, changed tickets, and other acts of God, etc, rather than spending extra on something you will already have.

When travelling abroad, you'll still need all the above-mentioned aspects, but you should certainly concentrate extra in the way of medical coverage in case something unforeseen happens while away. This doesn't mean you should scrimp on other aspects, though; in fact, you should bulk it up even more to include acts of terror if you are travelling to places known to be in unrest, and also coverage for any extreme sports you may wish to participate in - this includes skiing, which will usually need its own separate clause.
