One of the 'must haves' with any home that has an attic is loft ladders.
Trying to use a step ladder or chair to get up into the attic is dangerous at best.
I know, I did it for years myself.
The nice thing about today's ladders is how well made and efficient they are.
That said, here's a look at what you need to know before going out and making any purchase.
Attic ladders come in several different types that are designed around the available space for your area.
For example, in a tight closet area you would want to choose a telescopic design since it only requires a door size of 22 x 22 inches and the steps drop straight down.
For larger areas you could go with a concertina design which is one that the steps fold up on top of each other and store in one nice compact piece when not in use.
There is also 2 and 3 piece fold down ladders that you could choose as well.
These are just a few examples to give you some idea of what to expect.
Wooden loft ladders are by far the most common type used today.
They can range from your basic pine to a more luxurious stained design that is custom made for your home.
OLN, Titan and Werner are just a couple of the many name brands you can choose from here.
Others elect to purchase aluminum models that are lighter weight and easier to lower and raise.
Although some will argue they do not look as attractive, this type of material is very strong and durable.
Another style that is beginning to become more popular every year is the electric models.
They are hardwired to a wall switch, or remote control and simply lower and raise with the push of a button.
They work well for those who find it difficult to lower the steps by hand.
Naturally, the cost is much higher, but the convenience is great.
If you are one who likes to work on projects around the house yourself, they make several do-it-yourself ladder kits that you can purchase.
These kits will include all the hardware and instructions and can usually be assembled in a day.
