Changing Times: The Birth of Self Responsibility

Observing politics is an interesting pastime, particularly in the world of today's economy.
There are definitely changes looming in many countries as they reap the rewards of their past choices.
So many countries are teetering on bankruptcy that it would take most of this page to name them all.
What amazes me is that we are still asking why! Don't ask the politicians! You will get the same story from every one of them.
They will say it is the fault of past governments or it is just the ebb and flow of the economy.
Rarely will you hear politicians stand up and say: "We, the people, have made some bad decisions, and now we are paying for them.
I, as your elected representative will do something about it.
" Self responsibility does not seem to form in the minds of the people we elect to lead us out of our transgressions and into greatness.
Even when a leader does try to be courageous and honorable in his time in office, he is rewarded with a slap in the face.
Case in point, Barack Obama, the US President.
He has been very clear about where he is trying to take the United States.
It has been a daunting task working with and through the existing quagmire; the results of many years of selfish greed that has been the vane of his predecessors.
How does the good work of President Obama reap reward? The American people undermine his ability to govern by electing a majority of his opposition in the mid-term elections! All his good work is now up in smoke as the opposition laugh at his attempts to do good.
When are we going to ever learn? Getting behind our government and supporting them through thick and thin is essential for moving forward.
However, at the same time, we need to have leaders, like President Obama, who are ethical and that truly are working for the benefit of the people, not just their favourite lobbyist group.
We are in the midst of some very challenging economic times.
The methodology of government is going to change.
That is guaranteed! How can we consider the choices made by the American people in this last election to be anything close to helpful for fixing the humungous problem they have? Or more correctly, we have; since it affects everyone in the world.
As long as we perpetuate the old style of governing by undermining the people we pay to lead us; and as long as we keep electing people who are only serving their own interests, there will only be increased chaos.
There is one thing I have learned about life that is absolutely true: We also reap what we sow! We, in the West, may not agree with what we understand is the philosophy of the Chinese government but I ask each of you to consider this: Which country is moving forward right now on virtually every front?
  • China has one of the fastest growing economies.
  • China has taken some of the most dramatic actions toward correcting environmental problems
  • The average person in China is seeing drastic improvements in their quality of life through increased income and better living conditions
When I was in China a few years ago, we passed through many small villages as we visited several remote mining sites.
I was amazed at how many smiles I saw! The average person in rural China seemed to be very happy with their life.
They seemed to be really content.
In the big cities, people also seemed to be content with themselves.
Everyone had a home and a place to work.
There were no street people! Can we say the same about our lives in the west? It seems to me that there is a lesson to be learned from our current world situation.
If we look at the big picture; the results of our choices in the west have put us in total chaos with no sense of direction or any idea of how serious our situation really is.
On the other side of the world, the Chinese government is very clear in its direction.
The system does not tolerate the systemic dysfunction we in the West know.
Every person in China is reaping the reward of the decisions made by their government.
The single minded stand of the Chinese government would likely never be tolerated in the West; however, it might be time for us to look at the chaos we have created by the "me first and only" attitude that is currently undermining our quality of life.
As long as we continue to support a style of government based on individual agenda we can only expect the chaos to increase.
Maybe, just maybe it is time for change.
Maybe it is time for us to assess our philosophy of life and look at the reality of the truth about individual rights versus the needs of society as a whole.
It is inevitable that this time is coming.
Wouldn't it be better now than later?
