How to Create Antique Hooked Rugs

    • 1). Draw a preliminary pattern on paper to work with various designs and images you wish to make for your hook rug, such as flowers, farm animals or people. Draw a clear, precise line over your final design to darken the outlines of each image.

    • 2). Set a strip of masking tape along each edge of your base fabric to keep the threads from unraveling, and place your prepared fabric on a table or floor.

    • 3). Using your paper pattern as a guide, mark your design outlines on the surface of your fabric with a marker. Your lines should be clearly visible, but not thick.

    • 4). Stretch the fabric over the rug hooking frame.

    • 5). Create your drawn outlines with your fabric strips and rug hook by keeping one hand on each side of the base fabric. With your top hand holding the hook, push the hook through a hole to the underside of the base fabric. Use the hook to pick up a loop of the fabric strip held in your bottom hand.

    • 6). Pull the loop through the top with the hook until it is just over 1/4-inch tall. Hold the strip still with the bottom hand and repeat pulling up loops, side by side, one after the other along each of the outlines until they are complete.

    • 7). Use corresponding strips of fabric to fill in each of the design features. Feel free to move in different directions to fill in the objects, creating spirals, waves or tile-like patterns within the pattern.

    • 8). Fill in the background of the rug with more strips.

    • 9). Remove the rug from the frame, and finish off the edges with rug binding tape.
