Nausea in Pregnancy - How to Reduce the Impact

Nausea in pregnancy is not something that you want to deal with but you need to prepare for it since it is one of the most likely side effects of being pregnant.
It is estimated that up to 85% of pregnant women will get some type of morning sickness or nausea.
So even though you might be feeling exceptionally tired and emotional, and it's the last thing you want to deal with, some preparation is appropriate.
A few lucky women won't ever have to experience nausea in pregnancy but the rest of us can look forward to at least a month or two of illness.
After a while, this period of morning sickness can start to have a significant impact on both your body and your mental state.
The are several possible reasons for the nausea although none of them can be stated as a definite fact for every situation.
Most likely it is due the massive hormone fluctuations that your body is adjusting to with the new life inside you.
As you get pregnant, there is an increased production of a hormone called progesterone.
This hormone works to relax the uterus and also helps to stop early labour.
It is likely that this could be playing a part in making you feel nauseous as the effects of the hormone could be extended to your stomach.
Most women will experience morning sickness from around week 6 of their pregnancy and it could continue to around week 12 or 13.
It can even extend past the fourth month and a small percentage will even have it right till the end of the pregnancy.
It isn't necessarily anything to be too worried about providing that you stay hydrated - which is not always easy when you are being sick regularly.
You also need to make sure that you are still eating enough to sustain both you and your baby.
If you aren't able to keep enough food in your system then you need to see your doctor to get checked out.
The doctor will want to rule out a condition known as hyperemesis gravidarum which is basically extreme morning sickness.
Although not too common, it can be a serious problem so needs to be treated accordingly.
Although it isn't really possible to prevent nausea during pregnancy, you can take action to reduce and remove the potential symptoms.
Many women will have a preference for natural remedies that are likely to be better for both themselves and their baby.
A few examples are:
  • Make sure that get enough sleep as it can really make a difference.
    Without enough sleep, you will obviously feel more rundown and this can lead to even more morning sickness issues.
    If you need to, take a nap or two during the day.
  • Dry biscuits and crackers are worth considering as a food option and to reduce feelings of nausea.
  • Ginger is another popular option that is well known as an agent for settling upset stomachs.
    You can find it in several different natural products like candies, lollipops, crackers, and herbal teas.
  • Another proven and natural method is acupressure which works by applying pressure to a certain spot of the body located on the inside of the wrist.
    This can quickly work to reduce feelings of nausea for many women.
Not every remedy will work for every individual.
However, you should be able to find at least one that works for you and provides some relief from the inevitable nausea in pregnancy.
