What Do Greenhouses Use to Get Rid of Bugs?

    Cultural Controls

    • Using proper greenhouse practices keeps the chance of pest infestations to a minimum. Inspection of new plants before taking them into the greenhouse and the use of clean soil and sterilized tools and flats are essential practices. Puddles of water must be eliminated to prevent the growth of algae and moss, which attract gnats and shore flies.

    Biological Control

    • Beneficial organisms act as natural enemies to many greenhouse pests. Introducing beneficial insects such as parasitic wasps, predatory mites and lady beetles into your greenhouse will not bring the desired results as quickly as pesticides, but it is a safer approach.

    Pesticide Management

    • When pesticides become necessary, they work most efficiently when applied at the proper rate. Adequate coverage and sufficient pressure are also required to reach pests buried in dense foliage. Repeat applications of pesticides may be needed to control the problem.
