This October, Sydney Harbour comes alive with warships and tall ships from around the world when Sydney hosts the biggest Australian Navy event of the century, the International Fleet Review. With over 40 warships, 16 tall ships and a vast array of yachts, catamarans and other private vessels, Sydney Harbour will be the hub of this historical event.
A little bit of history about the Fleet Review. This prestigious naval event is being held to honour the centenary of the first entry of the Royal Australian Navy Fleet into Sydney on 4th October 1913. On that day, HMAS Australia and HMAS Sydney along with cruisers Melbourne and Encounter, and the destroyers Parramatta, Yarra and Warrego entered Sydney Harbour accompanied by hundreds of smaller vessels and the cheers of hundreds of locals.
To celebrate the centenary of this historical event, the Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Ray Griggs extended an invitation to over 50 nations to send a warship or tall ship to the International Fleet Review from 3rd to 11th of October 2013. The response has been overwhelming and more than 40 warships and 16 tall ships from all over the world are expected to participate. In addition to the review, the Royal Australian Navy Sea Power Conference and the 2013 Pacific International Maritime Congress & Exposition are also taking place at the Darling Harbour from the 7th of October.
The participating vessels converge in Jervis Bay on the 1st and 2nd of October in preparation for the grand entry into Sydney harbour. The International Fleet review kicks off on October 3rd with the entry of the tall ships into the harbour. This spectacular parade is truly stunning with the billowing sails catching the wind and reminding you of the romantic days of sailing ships.
Exactly 100 years to the day after the first historical entry, on October 4th, HMAS Sydney will lead the Royal Australian Navy warships into Sydney Harbour. This is followed by a 21-gun salute from HMAS Sydney. The Ceremonial Fleet Entry will be accompanied by aerobatic performances by the Navy's Helicopter Display Team, the RAAF Roulettes and Seahawk helicopters.
The pinnacle of the entire event is on October 5th, with the Ceremonial Fleet Review. Following a 100-gun salute to announce the arrival of the Official Reviewing Officer, Governor General Quentin Bryce AC CV, the warships will line up along the harbour for the review. You will also be treated to a formation flypast involving RAN helicopters, RAAF fixed wing aircraft, Australian Army choppers and aircraft from visiting nations. The day closes with a spectacular fireworks and lightshow display.
Sydneysiders and tourists will flock to the harbour to witness this rare event. The harbour will be crowded with people vying for the best vantage point to view the Ceremonial Fleet Review and the firework and light show. You can get ring-side seats to the entire event by joining a Navy Review Fireworks Dinner Cruise onboard the Magistic Two. Watch the brilliant pyrotechnics from the spacious decks and enjoy the lavish harbour buffet in the air-conditioned comfort of the luxury catamaran. It does not get better than that!
