How to Replace the Wire on a Weed Trimmer

    • 1). Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug if you have a gasoline-powered unit, or unplug the weed trimmer if it is electrically powered to avoid being shocked. Wear protective gloves throughout the entire replacement process.

    • 2). Remove the spool from the head of the weed trimmer by pushing it in and twisting it off, or as directed by the owners manual. The spool is the part that holds the wire, when the weed trimmer has extra wire.

    • 3). Latch a new, pre-wound spool into place using the same mechanism that held your old spool. Newer models will release more wire if the cutting length is too dull or breaks; it only requires that you shake the machine, or tap it on the ground. Older models require that you pull more wire from the spool.

    • 4). Plug in the spark plug wire for gasoline-powered models.
