    Misconceptions

    • Above ground pools are not as cheap as they used to be. Today, they make use of advanced materials that resist corrosion and are much stronger. They are safe and can last a long time. In addition, new building materials allow for beautiful decks to be built around the pools, so it's almost like owning an in ground pool.

    Types

    • Above ground pools are made from a frame of fiberglass or plastic and a liner. Above ground pool liners are made from high-grade vinyl's that are welded together in several different ways. These include uni-bead, overlap and double-welded seams for added strength that also resists the cold of winter. The liners are replaceable, so your pool can last even longer, and most offer warranties of 15 to 25 years. Above ground pools also offer modular decks made from aluminum, and robotic pool cleaners that require little maintenance.

    Benefits

    • An above ground pool's main benefit is the price. Instead of paying thousands of dollars for an in ground pool, you can spend a fraction of the cost and still get wet just the same way. In addition, your pool can be removed if you choose to remodel your home or take it down. While an inground pool is permanent and can add value to your home, not every home buyer wants one. An above ground pool could actually help your home sell faster, because it isn't permanent.

    Considerations

    • An above ground pool poses the same risks as an in ground pool that include liability concerns. It also needs to be maintained, and the water needs to be cleaned. If not, algae and other bacteria can form in the water. An above ground pool liner can also rip or tear and a small leak in the walls of the pool can turn into a serious problem if water begins to pour through. The walls of an above ground pool can be punctured by sharp objects and the weight of the pool can also kill the grass beneath.

    Features

    • An above ground pool is made from a frame or walls that are typically a very hard fiberglass or plastic, support beams and a floor, with a vinyl liner that is welded together at the seams. They include fencing, which goes around the top of the pool walls, and deck patios that can attach to the pool. Above ground pools don't typically have a foundation but one can be installed by the owner if they want one.
