When he was three years old, his parents shifted to United States.
After two years later, he then moved to Slovenia, where his family stayed about five years and then returned back to United States in the year 1967.
In 1978, he was graduated from the Yale University.
Later he joined the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
He then appeared on a play known as Master Harold...
and the Boys, in which he appeared as Hally.
This play was directed and produced by Athol Fugard in the year 1982.
He also appeared in several American popular series such as Cloud Nine, in which he starred as Caryl Churchill.
In Bruges film, he appeared as a Canadian tourist.
He also often appeared on the Broadway for which he was nominated for three Tony Awards and also for one of his performance in the production of the Brighton Beach Memoirs, one for the featured actor in the Two Shakespearean Actors and one for his major role in "The Caine Mutiny Court Martial" in which he appeared as Captain Queeg along with Tim Daly and David Schwimmer.
He is also well known for his role in the TV series Homicide: Life on the Street as Ed Danvers, a prosecuting attorney, in The X Files as Roland, in 24 as Andre Drazen, in Damages as Ray Fiske, in Lost as Edmund Burke, Big Love and in Heroes as Emile Danko.
In most of his screen appearances, eljko Ivanek plays as professional men such as government functionaries or lawyers and some times negative roles.
He is also playing a major role on the NBC new television series The Event.
