How to Decode Nonverbal Communication
- 1). Notice the distance between you and others. Distance helps communicate what a person thinks about you. You tend to keep a distance between four and 12 feet from a person you just met. As you become at ease with the person your comfort zone will likely shrink to between four feet and 18 inches. 18 inches to contact gets reserved for intimate relationships. If a person backs up as you move closer to her, she communicates differences in comfort level.
- 2). Observe the environment. A room's setup indicates who holds the authority in your interaction. Sitting behind a desk illustrates power and control. A circular setup demonstrates equality amongst participants. Recognizing these nonverbal cues will help you avoid overstepping your boundaries.
- 3). Study body language and facial expressions throughout the communication process, especially when you speak. Nonverbal communication displays another person's attitude toward the subject at hand. Leaning forward and making eye contact communicates interest while leaning back shows carelessness. Folded arms and/or crossed legs illustrate defensiveness. Acknowledging these signs will allow you to adjust your message as needed to ensure effective communication.
