A photo book is similar to a regular book, except its content is primarily photographs. It might have text included, but the main content is the photography or pictures. Designing a photo book can be tricky, but there are several tips and tricks available to help improve the overall appearance and effectiveness of your book. - Group your photos by subject matter, color or theme. If you group pictures chronologically, your book might not look unified. Another way to unify and group the photos is by assembling an entire page of black and white or sepia photographs. Also, add color to the background of the page to add unity. Putting certain colored backgrounds next to one another helps draw the reader's eye from one page to the next.
- Create a focal point on each page when you are designing your photo book. You create a focal point by selecting one or two pictures to be placed in the center of the page. Arrange the other photographs around the focal point, but do not overlap the center picture, or it will no longer be the focal point of the page. Do not use a landscape picture as your focal point. Use pictures with people, animals and objects.
- When designing your photo book, use similar pictures, designs and layout. The reader's eye usually starts at the left side of the page. Arrange the photographs from left to right and it will lead the viewer's eyes through a series of pictures and events, creating a story for them. The photographs don't need to be directly next to one another. They can sit at different heights on the page. Use smaller photographs as well as larger ones to enhance the layout and keep the reader's eye interested.
