How to Pick a Bowling Ball Weight
- 1). Choose a ball that is 10 percent of your body weight. Bowling ball weights range between 6 and 16 pounds. In general, men use bowling balls between 14 and 16 pounds; women tend to use bowling balls that range between 10 and 14 pounds.
- 2). Apply the five-second test. If you are unable to hold a ball for five seconds without your arm shaking, the ball is too heavy.
- 3). Test the comfort of the ball. If the ball strains your wrist, elbow or arm, it's too heavy. You should be able to release the ball comfortably, without straining.
- 4). Analyze how the ball responds. The bowling ball should roll naturally as you release it. If the ball hangs in the air, it's too light. If the ball tends to drop prematurely, it's too heavy.
- 5). Choose a weight that suits your style. Some bowlers attack the pins head-on; other bowlers prefer to place a lot of spin on the ball. The first approach requires a slightly heavier ball, and a lighter-weight ball works best for applying spin.
