Choose your trunk or suitcase. A larger chest that opens like a clam shell can double as a stand on stage. Beginners may need to start with something smaller, such as a suitcase.

Select a wireless headset microphone that picks up your voice while your mouth is closed. Holding a microphone to your throat will ruin the illusion that your puppet is speaking. When performing for only a few people you can leave this in the trunk, but for a large group the microphone ensures that everyone can hear your jokes.

    • 3). Select a portable speaker that fits in your trunk. No matter where you perform you will be prepared with a microphone and speaker that you know works. Include any cables that go with the speaker and choose a speaker that also plays music in case you want to sing on stage.

    • 4). Create or buy your puppets. The puppets are the stars of your show. Some ventriloquists make their own, but a beginner can purchase a dummy or even use a sock puppet. What matters most is that the character is appropriate for the act you are performing. Include any wardrobe changes (for you or the dummy) or props that are used during your act.

    • 5). Pack your trunk and weigh it. If you plan to travel by air, make sure the entire trunk weighs less than 50 pounds to avoid extra fees. Use padding if your dummy is fragile.
