How to Repair and Clean a Computer for Performance
- 1). Turn your computer off and remove the power cord from the back. Locate the case-removal lever and remove the cover from the computer. If you have a desktop PC the case-removal lever should be on the top of the case. If you have a tower PC the lever should be on the side.
- 2). Look inside your computer for any accumulated fuzz, dust or dirt. Look especially around the fan and around the back of the computer where the cord connects to the PC. The fan tends to draw in dust, dirt and debris from the surrounding area and over time that debris can build up and interfere with the operation of your computer.
- 3). Use a can of compressed air to blow out any accumulated dirt. Before using the compressed air be sure to give a couple of test sprays to remove any moisture that has accumulated. It might take several sprays with the compressed air to remove all of the dust and dirt that has accumulated in the computer's case.
- 4). Turn on your computer with the case open and listen for the operation of the fan. If you do not hear the fan running turn off your computer and check to make sure the fan is not blocked. Remove any dirt or debris blocking the fan, then turn your computer on again.
- 5). Look for any loose wires inside our computer. Locate the hard drive and make sure the gray, flat IDE cable is firmly seated. Also make sure that all power cables are fully seated. If any cables appear to be loose, be sure to remove and replace those cables.
