Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are considered as the healthiest food groups as they are low in cholesterol and calorie content. Fresh fruits and vegetables are high in soluble fibers, vitamins and many essential nutrients that not only keep the bad cholesterol away but are also necessary for overall health of the body. A good cholesterol diet should contain plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to reduce the risk of heart diseases and cancer. However, canned fruits and vegetables should be avoided as they may have high sodium levels.

Whole grains are high in energy and dietary fibers and are effective for lowering cholesterol levels. They are low in saturated fat and calorie content and should form an essential part of the low cholesterol diet plan. Breads, pasta, beans, peas, cereals nuts and seeds have a high starch content and have no dietary cholesterol.

Foods from animal sources are sure to contain cholesterol, but the amount varies depending on several factors. Fish and poultry are the types of meats low in cholesterol and saturated fats. Some shellfish may also come under the type of foods low in cholesterol. So one can enjoy chicken, turkey, fish and even shrimps, without thinking much of the cholesterol.
