Reasons to Aerate & Overseed Lawn
- Aeration is the process of promoting healthy lawns by using tools to poke holes in the soil. Holes should be 2 to 3 inches deep and 2 to 8 inches apart. Aerate once a year in the spring or fall.
- Holes in the soil loosen compacted dirt, increase water absorption, decrease runoff, and allow beneficial organisms such as earthworms to better penetrate the soil. Oxygen, fertilizer and other nutrients become more available at the root level, promoting vigorous growth of the lawn.
- Overseeding should be done after aeration in the fall annually as needed for bare or thin areas or once every three or four years for the entire lawn. Mow the lawn at the shortest setting, aerate the area, overseed, and water thoroughly.
- New growth will help establish healthy turf in weak or thin areas, increase disease and drought resistance, and prevent weeds, runoff and erosion.
- Choose seed that will match or blend with the current lawn. Knowledgeable staff at a local nursery can make recommendations for your area.
