    • 1). Spread a thin layer of fiberglass paper adhesive onto the laminate backsplash with the flat edge of the trowel. Comb the adhesive with the ridged edge of the trowel until the adhesive has reached an even depth.

    • 2). Spread the fiberglass paper over the backsplash area. Press it evenly into the adhesive. Run the flat edge of the trowel over the paper to remove bubbles and create a smooth surface.

    • 3). Apply a thin, even layer of mortar to the fiberglass with a putty knife. Hold the edge of a straightedge against the backsplash. Drag it across the surface to even out the mortar and produce a smooth surface. Let this layer of mortar dry overnight.

    • 4). Lay out your backsplash tiles on a nearby flat surface to determine your pattern. Take into account the position of backsplash edges and any outlets you will have to tile around. Cut the tiles to fit these areas, using a tile saw, before beginning installation.

    • 5). Trowel additional mortar onto the backsplash area, combing it into an even thickness. Apply the backsplash tiles in the preferred layout one at a time, twisting them slightly into place. Let the backsplash dry for 24 to 48 hours.

    • 6). Apply grout to the tile joints with a rubber float. Drag the float across the surface of the tiles, directing the grout into the spaces between the tiles.

    • 7). Let the grout set and dry for 10 minutes. Wipe the face of the tiles with a damp sponge to remove excess grout.
