But in discussing these graphics, Pevner can take a pragmatic turn, too. “From a producer’s point of view I have to come up with an image every year that sells the party. It’s as simple as that. I have to tap into some subversive sensibility while keeping it conversational, provocative, and saleable. How it ages? I have no idea.”

They may just be marketing collateral, but they’re marketing collateral produced with great attention to detail.


Black Party posters are so adept at striking the theme and mood of each year’s party that they can be viewed as effectively starting the party. And they’re aging quite well. Academics of the future will glimpse a subculture from them.
