The Causes

• Denture relining repairs the dentures to fit the changes in the mouth's shape or normal wear and tear from use over the years. Changes happen because of weight loss or gain in a patient's life or for various other reasons.There can be an infection to the areas in the mouth where the dentures are placed initially that deform the gum line such as bumps. Water retention also can alter the integrity of the person's mouth as well. Age and condition of the dentures are a factor that can determine if a denture reline is needed. Often a denture reline is needed every two years or as recommended by a dentist.
  
  

Denture Reline

• The procedure shaves the underneath of the dentures and replaces it with plastic for proper alignment to the gums. Other methods include a hard reline where the dentist removes some of the plastic interior before filling the area with a type of putty which makes a new impression of the gum line that is sent to the lab to fashion new dentures. A soft reline, on the other hand, uses a waxy or rubbery material to line the area of the denture that needs constant relining due to painful spots from sensitive gums. Temporary relines helps those with swollen or misshapen gums due to prolonged denture use by anesthetic to minimize the swelling before fitting the proper dentures.
  
  

Types of Dentures

• There are two different types of dentures given to patients who need the replacement of their natural teeth. A partial denture replaces only one tooth or several inside a person's mouth. A full plate is for dental patients who need an entire set of teeth. An immediate denture is one set in the opening of the gum left by removal of a tooth the same day. The Cul-Sil denture anchors itself with the other natural teeth. Either course requires the supervision of a dentist to ensure proper installation and placement of the dentures for comfort.
