How to Clean a Bench Grinder Dressing Stone
- 1). Use a dry, stiff bristle brush to brush away all loose grit from the dressing stone.
- 2). Rub an Art Gum rubber eraser all over the dry stone to gently remove small dirt particles and "glaze" buildup. This is the sheen that sometimes develops if metal tools have been sharpened using oil rather than water. Too much pressure against the grind stone also causes glaze to form. It will come off onto the dressing stone as the grind stone is dressed, and it must be removed.
- 3). Put the dressing stone in a basin of warm water and use a stiff, bristle brush to remove remaining loose grit and dirt. If glazing is still present, add a small amount of household ammonia to the water to help dissolve the hardened oil. Wear gloves and use adequate ventilation.
- 4). Rinse dressing stone well in clear, clean water.
- 5). Air dry the stone and store it in a clean, lidded box to prevent dust or moisture buildup.
