In order to get rid of acne, sufferers are willing to try many products.  Some of the specific products will help your skin, but other products or techniques often cause the condition to worsen.  How can you determine if the methods and substances you apply to your skin are helping the condition or having no positive effect.  Even worse, some of the things that you may be relying on to cure the acne blemishes are actually harmful to the skin itself.  Here's how to avoid actions that will have long term negative effects on your skin.

Don't Use Abrasives

In order to get rid of acne, don't make the mistake of thinking that abrasive pads, scratching the surface with scrubbers of any type or harsh cleansing methods are the way to eliminate the curse of the condition. Sometimes acne sufferers go to great lengths to scrub the already compromised skin in the hopes of clearing blackheads, pimples, whiteheads or zits. Abrasive treatments remove the top level of the skin, but aggressive scrubbing may take deeper layers of tissue, thus opening up the skin to infection.  Even this action will not help the sufferer to improve resistance to acne.

Don't Spot Treat

You can't get rid of acne by just treating one blemish after another.  Great acne blemishes treatment should include a complete system of oral medication and topical applications in order to improve each negative aspect of blemishes related to acne. Sure, you can apply a drop of drying agent to any single zit or blackhead and improve the appearance in that area, but it is more than likely that there will still be other blemishes or new blemishes close to the area. Spot treating can be helpful in certain instances, such as when you find a single nasty blemish on the morning before the senior prom and want to treat it aggressively.

Hands Off

One of the most important rules to remember when you are trying to get rid of acne is to keep your hands off your face.  Most people do not realize how often germs and bacteria are transferred from surfaces they touch to the hands and from the hands to the face.  If the skin is already compromised, it can be a real risk for infection and further scarring of the acne area. So, always wash your hands thoroughly even before you wash your face and you will help to cut down on the risk of germs and infection on your acne marked skin.

Avoid Oil

To get rid of acne blemishes, one of the important factors is that of avoiding oil.  Both external oil, usually in the products used on the skin such as make-up, creams and softeners and dietary oil have been considered to be factors in the prevention of acne blemishes.  Current thinking places less importance on the relationship between acne and dietary choices. Choosing healthy food options makes sense from an overall health standpoint, but eating greasy foods will not give you an acne breakout.
