Can You Use Tanning Beds While Pregnant?
- Tanning in a tanning bed exposes you to the same risk of skin cancer as the sun. Just because it emits only UVA rays does not mean tanning beds are not harmful. Visiting a tanning booth 10 times over a year can double your risk of developing melanoma.
- Having a body temperature higher 102 degrees Fahrenheit can cause malformations in the spine of your fetus. Lying on a tanning bed can raise your body temperature.
- If you have sensitive skin, exposure to ultraviolet rays, either from the sun or a tanning bed, can make you more susceptible to chloasma, which are dark skin spots on your face and/or arms, during pregnancy.
- Lying on your back for extended periods can limit the blood flow to your heart and unborn child. Be cautious of how long you are lying on your back in a tanning bed.
- It's best to consult your doctor when trying to if you should use tanning beds while you are pregnant. Your doctor can give you the best information for you to make an informed decision.
