What Is the Chemistry Regents?

The Chemistry Regents is an exam used to test competency in chemistry. Most often, the Chemistry Regents refers to the exam that is administered at the completion of a New York State Regents high school chemistry course.

When Is the Chemistry Regents Exam?

The Chemistry Regents exam is administered January, June and August each year.

Overview of the Chemistry Regents Test

The Chemistry Regents exam is a 3-hour long test which has 3 parts:

• Part A - Multiple Choice
  Select the one best answer for each question. Part A tests basic knowledge and comprehension of the core chemistry concepts.
   
  
• Part B - Multiple Choice and Constructed Response
  The multiple choice questions of Part B assess your ability to analyze chemistry situations and to apply your knowledge. You must write the answer for each constructed-response question. The section tests your ability to draw and interpret graphs and perform numerical calculations.
   
  
• Part C - Extended Constructed Response
  You must write the answers for each question in Part C. The questions test your ability to apply chemistry concepts and skills. Each question should be answered using complete sentences.

Chemistry Regents Test-Taking Tips

• Answer all the questions! There is no penalty for guessing, so put something down, especially on the multiple choice sections.
• Write neatly. If the grader can't read your answer, it won't matter whether it is right or wrong.
• Budget your time. Bring a watch or a clock so you can pace yourself. Arrive early to the test center. Don't get hung up on questions that are taking a long time to figure out or to answer. Skip those and go back to them.
• Don't write too much! If you are given a choice of questions, read over all of your options and only answer the ones you need to answer. When answering a question, provide only the requested answer. Don't waste your time or confuse your grader by writing extra information.
• Relax. Just take a deep breath and do your best. The test will be long, so don't be afraid to ask to be excused to the restroom if you need to take a short break to use the facilities or just to collect your thoughts.
