Do it Yourself Fiberglass Fenders
- 1). Clean the original fender with a degreasing cleanser to remove all dirt and oil. Spray the mold with a gel coat to protect the surface and to make it easier to remove the fiberglass fender when finished. Allow the gel coat to dry for 24 hours.
- 2). Put on the work gloves. Cut the carbon fiberglass into small strips. Lay a layer of fiberglass over the fender mold.
- 3). Add a layer of resin to the fiberglass. Try not to overlap the edges of the fender or mold with resin. You would have to eliminate any excess material later, which can be a time-consuming process.
- 4). Saturate the fiberglass with the resin. Apply a second layer of fiberglass, and another layer of resin. Continue building up fiberglass and resin layers until you have 5 layers of fiberglass. Alternate a carbon layer with a fiberglass layer, ending with a carbon layer.
- 5). Roll the metal roller over the fiberglass to eliminate air pockets. Allow the fiberglass to dry for 12 hours. Add one final coat of resin to fill in the holes and remove the rough texture of the fiberglass sheeting. Allow this resin to cure for 24 hours.
- 6). Remove the fender from the mold. You may have to tap gently with a rubber mallet on the sides of the fender to release it.
- 7). Note where the mounting holes sit on the original fender, and drill a hole into the new fender in the same spots. Drill carefully, so that you do not crack the fiberglass resin.
