The primary engine of plant growth, Nitrogen, is water soluble so as you water your containers, the nitrogen leaves through the bottom of the container.

Furthermore, the creation of your own compost tea can result in even better blooms.

Watering - Finally, regardless of the size of your container, it is extremely important to ensure that you soak your container all the way through the bottom.
To ensure that you have done so correctly, you can keep watering the container until you see water emerging from the bottom of the pot.
This will promote the growth of roots and allow them to reach all parts of the container.
