How to Apply a Garage Floor Sealer

105 16
Not many people realize that it is important to apply a garage floor sealer in order to keep it looking good and protecting its surface. A clear acrylic sealer will protect the concrete from deteriorating due to road salt, engine oil and any other automotive fluid. Another benefit of this project is that it keeps down the concrete dust and makes it a lot easier to clean the floor too.

You cannot apply a sealer over top of any other coating including paint. You will likely only need to apply one coating of the garage floor sealer since the concrete never sees the sun or any of the elements as well. There are some basic materials and tools required for the job and here they are:

€ Large fan for drying surface
€ Protective clothing
€ Long handled paint roller
€ Large paint tray
€ Stiff bristled paintbrush
€ Eye protection
€ Medium nap paint roller
€ Concrete cleaner and degreaser
€ Stiff brush with a bucket
€ Respirator with a vapor mask
€ Rubber gloves
€ Concrete sealer

Your first step is to clean the floor thoroughly. You must remove all dust, dirt oil and grease. For the oil and grease, you will need to use a heavy-duty commercial cleaner and degreaser, which is specifically intended for concrete. This is where you will need your stiff brush and bucket. If you encounter some really stubborn stains then allow the cleaner to soak on the stain for up to thirty minutes or whatever the instructions on the container suggest. You may need to apply more than one coat of solution to clean the tough to remove spills.

Many garage floor sealers contain hazardous chemicals so make sure you are protecting your lungs and skin which is why we suggest a vapor mask and good gloves for this job. When the floor has dried from the cleaning, you should be ready for the coat of sealant. Always test on an out of the way area before applying. Use your long handled roller and medium nap roller for the application. Cut in around the edges with your paintbrush first. Always start in a far corner and work your way outwards. How many people have ever painted themselves into a corner, although it sounds funny, it is a pain in the butt to get out of that predicament.

Make sure you do not leave any puddles of your garage floor sealer, be sure to spread it uniformly across the concrete. One coat is generally enough. It will usually take a few hours for it all to dry. Use your large fan to speed up the drying time if you like. These are the basic steps to doing this do-it-yourself home project. Before tackling any home improvement, you should do your research and plan it out, remember that sometimes things do not go as planned.
