Small Engine Generator Troubleshooting

    • Troubleshooting a gas generator involves basic mechanic tools: wrenches, screwdrivers, socket wrench, spark plug socket. To troubleshoot the generator you may want to invest a few dollars in an AC voltmeter and ammeter, which are small hand-held devices needed to test the generator's output. Pawn shops are ideal places to find good used tools at low prices you will only use occasionally.

    Gas Engine

    • The generator's gas engine is similar to any lawn mower engine. The only different is instead of turning a shaft connected to a blade the shaft turns magnets in a coil to produce electric current. With any small gas engine there are three main components: fuel, fuel/air mix (carburetor) and the cylinder and piston including the spark plug.

If your generator will not start or runs erratically, it can be something as simple as water in the fuel or possibly it's low on oil. The generator has an oil reservoir. Also, the generator engine has an air filter to clean out any dirt or particles from the air before entering the carburetor. If the filter is dirty or clogged, airflow is restricted.

Check the spark plug for any fouling or buildup on the anode. If carbon deposits blacken the spark plug end inserted in the engine then spark can be inhibited.

    Generator

    • If the engine runs well, but you do not have power at the electrical sockets or the power is sporadic, there may be a problem with the engine/generator connection. Power from the engine is not being transmitted to the electrical motor. Also, just like any other electrical system a portable generator of any size has fuses. Check the fuses and replace any that have a burned-through wire. Do not assume a bigger fuse will last longer. Fuses are in electrical systems to protect the generator and whatever you plug into the socket. Better to burn out a small fuse than either the generator or your appliance.
