For anyone diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, making the right food choices could mean the difference in just feeling okay and feeling great.
It could also mean the difference between having regulated blood sugar levels and having levels which are either dangerously high or dangerously low.
Certain food choices can make all the difference in the direction your health is heading.
In the second part of this two-part series, we cover more of the top food choices diabetics should eat in order to improve their health and to help them better regulate their blood sugar.
This will help prevent other medical conditions from occurring or, if present, from becoming worse.
1.
Apples.
Anyone who ever heard the saying "an apple a day keeps the doctor away" must have also been referring to diabetics.
Apples have a lot going for them.
  • for one, they are packed with antioxidants such as pectin.
These antioxidants help your body to detoxify and to rid it of harmful free radicals.
  • they also lower your body's need for insulin since they come with their own form of natural sugar, and
  • don't forget about the skin which is chock full of fiber, which any diabetic will tell you is worth it's weight in gold as far as how much it improves digestion and other functions.
2.
Pomegranates.
Even though pomegranates are full of natural sugar this fruit is different from other fruit in that the sugar does not affect your blood sugar levels.
Pomegranates also help diabetics in another important way...
by how it reduces the risk of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arterial walls due to thickening.
As plaque builds inside the arterial walls, the blockage hardens the walls and greatly reduces the flow of blood.
Pomegranate juice helps to break down this plaque.
3.
Protein.
Some people with Type 2 diabetes might unknowingly be doing themselves more harm than good.
They could be doing this by limiting their protein intake.
While too much protein can be harmful for you, there is a need for your body to have a specific amount of protein in order to help combat the effects of sugar.
Protein helps in a lot of ways but the most important is how it helps to build muscle and burn fat, which are two very important factors for diabetics.
What is the ideal amount of protein for a diabetic? Between 15 and 20 percent.
Studies have shown eating lots of protein-rich foods such as eggs, milk, meat, and cheese can tax your kidneys.
They have a hard time filtering out the protein from the waste material.
Make sure to include the protein in your snacks when computing your daily protein total.
You are always advised to check with your doctor before making adjustments to your eating plan.
