Read the instruction manual. If you can't find the manual, contact Dell or visit their Web site (see below) to inform yourself about the procedure and outcome for a hard reset.

Exhaust other options first. Especially if you're performing a hard reset because of performance issues, try other things first as a hard reset is the most drastic of measures and should be done rarely, if ever.

Save any personal data or information you'll want later. A hard reset will completely erase any personal settings or data on your Dell Axim, so if you want to access it later, save it to a removable disk or your home computer.

For Dell Axim X3s, press and hold the power button. While you're holding it, press and hold the reset button. This will bring up a screen asking you to confirm the hard reset; do so by pressing the Contacts button.

For Dell Axim X5s, the procedure is the same as for the X3 models.

If you wish to cancel the hard reset, or initialized it by mistake, press the Mail button.

The hard reset takes your Dell Axim back to factory specifications. Proceed from this point to personalize it as you did upon purchase of your Axim.
