1) Always empty your kitchen trash. You should do this once a day at least, even twice if necessary. Empty trash cans in other rooms frequently. When you take the trash out, seal it in a large plastic bag and place it as close to the curb as possible, away from your home.

2) Wipe up all spills immediately, not just with water, but with soap too. Thoroughly scrub. Nobody likes a sticky mess anyway except for bugs.

3) Wash dishes daily and dont let dirty dishes sit around. Dont leave plates of uneaten food sitting around in rooms throughout your home either. Always put food away as youre preparing it. Once youve eaten, wash dishes immediately. Dont just put them in the sink or even the dishwasher. Clean them as you go.

4) Clean up pet food and clean out food bowls for your pets frequently. Youll also want to make sure you keep pet food storage containers in a metal bin, not a paper bag that the dry food comes in. Bugs can chew right through it.

5) Sweep, mop, and vacuum frequently. Once a week is usually about right for most homes and apartments. This includes cleaning all rooms in your home. Most people prefer to set aside a designated cleaning day for their homes to get this done.

6) Seal all caulking in narrow crevices, such as kitchen sink backsplash tiles, bathroom sinks, and shower tiles. Seal doorways too, and windows. Silicon caulking works great. Ants love these tiny little spaces.

7) Avoid piling old newspapers and magazines on top of one another. Throw them out to avoid attracting silver fish. These bugs love paper and they love the glue that binds the magazines together.

8) Keep your home as dry as possible by having a dehumidifier and having lots of air circulating with your fans. Damp, dark homes can become breeding grounds for all types of bugs, especially in tropical climates like Florida. Watch out for leaky faucets and standing water that may accumulate in sinks or bathtubs.

9) Groom your pets frequently with brushes, combs, and by bathing them, when appropriate. Even if they arent outdoor animals, you want to be sure you help groom them, as being on the floor all of the time will accumulate dust and dirt on their coats.

10) Make sure all food and beverage containers in your refrigerator and freezer are tightly sealed. Make sure to throw out all food that has gone bad too. You should also routinely clean out these places to ensure there are no spills or residues inside them.
