Which Grocery Stores Are in Denver?
Whether you're visiting Denver or have just moved to town, visit our list of grocery stores before making up a shopping list. Don't run out looking for Ralphs or wander around searching for Winn-Dixie in the Mile High City. However, out-of-towners familiar with the Kroger brand should head to King Soopers, which was purchased by Kroger and stocks Kroger generic items.
In June 2014, Instacart also premiered in Denver. The app allows users to hire personal grocery shoppers with a minimum of $10 in groceries. Fees range from $3.99 for two-hour delivery to $14.99 for one-hour delivery "Instacart has been extremely successful in young cities with blooming startup scenes, and Denver fits the mold entirely," said Apoorva Mehta, founder of Instacart, in a statement. "We are very excited to give people in Denver access to healthy groceries on demand."
Due to a quirk in Colorado law, most grocery stores do not sell alcohol, with the exception of 3.2% beer. Chain stores are limited to one store per state that can sell alcohol besides low-alcohol beer. For example, the Trader Joe's on 8th & Colorado Boulevard stocks alcohol but not the other stores. The SuperTarget in Glendale, Colo. also carries alcohol.
The California chain opened its doors on Valentine's Day in Denver in 2014, causing some Denverites to swoon for the gourmet retailer. The location on Colorado Boulevard sells alcohol, including "Two Buck Chuck" wine, which now sells for more than $2. Trader Joe's also has a location in the south Denver suburb of Greenwood Village, as well as Boulder. A third location in the Capitol Hill neighborhood is slated to open in September 2014.More »

In Denver, King Soopers and Safeway are the most common grocery stores in many neighborhoods. In mountain towns, City Market stores are also owned by Kroger. Safeway and Albertsons announced a merger in March 2014, and the merger is expected to close in the third quarter of 2014. Until the merger closes, Safeway and Albertsons stores in Denver will operate under their individual brands. "Working together will enable us to create cost savings that translate into price reductions for our customers," said Albertsons CEO Bob Miller in a statement.
Whole Foods Market, with roots in Austin, Texas, offers organic and natural food in Denver. The acquisition of Boulder-based Wild Oats in 2007 brought more Denver locations under the Whole Foods umbrella. Whole Foods has a spacious store in the Cherry Creek neighborhood of Denver, as well as a smaller location in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.More »

Besides a wide selection of produce, Sprouts also offers bulk products, gluten-free products and store-brand products. As its name implies, Natural Grocers carries natural and organic food, as well as vitamins. The downtown Denver location at 2375 15th St. is close to LoDo and other tourist attractions.
