How to Arrange a Large Master Bedroom

    • 1). Choose the furniture you will use in your master bedroom. In addition to the bed, nightstands and dresser, you may choose to create a seating area with a TV, an office area with a desk and chair or even a home gym area.

    • 2). Measure the furniture pieces you have chosen for your room with a tape measure and write down the height, width and depth of each piece.

    • 3). Measure the room itself, drawing a rough outline on regular paper and making notes of the measurements as you go.

    • 4). Transfer the room measurement drawing onto graph paper, drawing to scale. The easiest way to draw to scale is to have 1 foot equal 1 inch. For example, a 12-foot-long wall would be 12 inches long on paper. You may have to tape more than one piece of graph paper together depending on the size. Use a marker to draw the room.

    • 5). Measure the placement of the windows and doors and transfer and mark their size and placement on your graph paper drawing. Again, use the marker.

    • 6). Draw the outline of your furniture onto graph paper with a pencil, again drawing to scale where 1 foot equals 1 inch. Try to be as accurate as possible.

    • 7). Move the furniture paper pieces around on your graph paper drawing to create different arrangements until you find one you like. You can erase an arrangement you don't like and start again. Two or more chairs could be arranged to create a seating area around a television. A desk, chair and filing cabinet can create an office area across the room from the bed. Or a low table can be placed at the end of your bed for laundry or knickknacks. In a large master bedroom, try to balance large pieces of furniture, such as the bed or a desk, around the room to avoid overpowering one area.

    • 8). Move your furniture into place according to the arrangement in your diagram. Ask for help from a family member for heavier pieces.
