While some bands wait 3 years or more between albums, the veteran New York band Pro-Pain is a little more prolific. Absolute Power is their 13th studio album in their nearly 20 years of existence. They also have a new drummer, Rick Halverson (Cellador).

Pro-Pain delivers the sound you'd expect on Absolute Power: metallic hardcore that's aggressive and groovy. They balance hardcore posturing with melody, with enough brutality for the pit, but plenty of catchiness for repeat listens.“Stand My Ground” has a little bit of everything, from galloping thrash riffs to blazing guitar solos to melodic vocals.

Gary Meskill's vocals are a combination of hardcore yells, raspy melodic singing and a singsong mix of the two. His harsh vocals are delivered with energy and passion, and although he won't be mistaken for Rob Halford any time soon, his melodic vocals are serviceable and distinct and fit with Pro-Pain's style.

While there's plenty of melody on Absolute Power, Pro-Pain has dialed it back slightly from their last couple of albums. There are a few lulls, but Pro-Pain delivers a consistent, workmanlike performance. The album ends with “Hate Coalition,” an angry song with some black metal influences. It's a strong conclusion to a solid album.
