Understanding why a sexless marriage can lead to divorce can help couples struggling with this issue.
When you first realize that intimacy happens a lot less frequently than it used to within your relationship you may come up with viable excuses.
Things like being tired from tending to the kids or having to get to bed early because you have a big day tomorrow all make sense in the short term.
However, when months pass and there is no intimacy at all, that's an entirely different matter.
Ignoring a sexless marriage won't remedy it.
Understanding the seriousness of the situation is often enough to light a fire beneath the couple because they finally realize exactly what's at stake.
The reason why a sexless marriage can lead to divorce is actually very simple.
Physical intimacy is a natural extension of emotional intimacy in a relationship.
When one goes missing, the other follows suit.
You and your spouse may not recognize the distance between the two of you initially.
But over time when sex isn't part of the relationship any longer, feelings will start to change.
The person who always has the excuse for why they don't want to make love may begin to feel their partner resents them.
They likely do, for good reason.
Whenever a person feels that their spouse isn't interested in them sexually anymore they start to view them differently and bitterness is just one small part of that along with anger, disappointment and frustration.
Once this happens, the marriage itself is bound to suffer.
The lack of intimacy can lead to additional problems outside the bedroom.
A small and somewhat insignificant disagreement can become major because the spouse who wants to make love will use any excuse to lash out at their partner.
This obviously leads to more conflict.
This typically escalates until it reaches a point where neither person wants to spend time with the other anymore.
Separate bedrooms become the norm and the couple stops talking about anything important.
They bottle their feelings up inside and slowly and painfully fall out of love with each other until nothing is left but a shell of the former, loving and passionate relationship.
Divorce is the only course of action left to take by then.
A sexless marriage is a serious issue and should be dealt with promptly.
If you are living in a relationship in which sex has disappeared, work on improving that now before it's too late for your marriage.
