Solutions for Killing Fire Ants
- Using applications of a broadcast bait, such as Ambro or Logic, are effective in reducing the amount of fire ants. The baits contain a toxicant and an insect growth regulator. A key to the success of this type of bait is to make sure it is fresh -- old baits turn rancid and do not attract the ants. Also do not use the bait during wet weather. It is important to follow the directions on the label of the bait product. Use it when the pests are actively foraging for food, generally when the temperatures are between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Drenching the ant mound with about 3 gallons of hot water is an effective way to destroy the nest. It seeps into the vertical tunnels, thus collapsing the mound. It is best to use the scalding or boiling water on cool, sunny mornings. Use caution to avoid burning yourself or getting the hot water on nearby plants. The heat of the water can destroy the plants as well.
- Digging up the ant mound and discarding it in a sealed container gets rid of the fire ant problem. Sprinkle baby or talcum powder liberally on the handle of the shovel. This prevents the pests from climbing the tool. Use the powder on the inside of the bucket or other container to prevent them from climbing out before you can dispose of the mound properly.
- Many homeowners hesitate to use harsh chemicals in their lawn area. Organic pesticides that contain nicotine sulfate, rotenone, and pyrethrins are effective in controlling the ant population. It is important that the products contact and kill the queen to work effectively.
