Sewing a Rope on the Edge of a Cushion

    • 1). Measure and cut a piece of rope that is 2 inches longer than your cushion's circumference. Wrap tape around the cut ends of the rope to keep it from fraying while you sew.

    • 2). Pin the rope trim into place around the edge of the cushion, covering the seam. The rope ends should overlap in the center of one side of the cushion, not at a corner. If the cushion has a picture on the front and is intended to sit in a certain orientation, make sure the rope ends are on the bottom, where they’re most likely to be hidden.

    • 3). Thread a sharp needle with thread in a color that matches the cushion.

    • 4). Sew the rope to the cushion, beginning at one pinned rope end and using a blind stitch to hide the stitches. A blind stitch involves coming up from the inside of the cushion just beside the rope, going through the rope near where it touches the cushion and putting the needle back down into the cushion just on the other side, so that the amount of actual thread showing is minimal. Travel the needle and thread under the cushion’s surface back to the first side and repeat the blind stitch.

    • 5). Stitch all the way around the cushion, removing the straight pins as you sew along the rope.

    • 6). Cut the second rope end so that it sits exactly flush with the first end and apply tape so it will not fray. Sew the second rope end securely to the cushion.

    • 7). Cut a 2-inch square piece of fabric that matches the cushion fabric. Fold the edges under in a small hem and then hand-stitch the fabric square on either side of the rope ends to cover where they join.
