Topics of Conversation to Avoid on the First Date

If you are on your first date with someone and you are either at dinner or driving somewhere, good conversation can make the date go so much more smoothly than with lousy conversation.
So what do you talk about? The number of topics you can talk about is virtually limitless, so here's a few topics to not bring up on a first date.
1) Sex - Even if sex is the only thing on your mind, don't bring it up in any form on your date.
By this, I mean don't bring up any past, present or future sexual relationships (either real or imaginary).
The same goes with talking about your sex drive, appetite and online liaisons.
2) Ex-partners - If you find you are talking more about your ex-partner on a first date than your date, chances are you are not ready to be dating at all.
Even if your Ex was a complete fruitcake, only talk about past relationships later, and only if they are brought up naturally.
If you find yourself talking about your Ex, it brings up a 'C' word more frightening than 'commitment', and that word is 'comparison'.
Why would you want to start a relationship wondering if you measure up to someone you don't even know? 3) Politics - Talking about current affairs is usually a good start.
However, topics such as the death penalty, abortion, welfare reform, gun control, the president, National health reform and the likes can make a date feel very uncomfortable, especially if your date takes a different stance.
The potential payoff just isn't worth it.
Would you really want a potentially full-scale argument on your first date? Of course not.
Save it for when you are married! J Other hot topics to avoid include the following: immigration, any current war or conflict, women in the military, spanking, body piercing, the designated hitter rule, etc.
4) Religion - If you are talking about a family gathering or a funny family story and the word "Christmas" or "Hanukah" slips out, that perfectly alright.
However, if you are reaching for your wallet and the Bible, Koran, or a Jehovah's Witness brochure falls out, this is a bit over the top and your date will be a bit scared.
If your date puts you on the spot and asks you a religious-type question, such as if you believe in God or not, simply change the topic to something else, such as whether you think OJ was really guilty or not.
You may be wondering what to talk about on your first date, and really, there is no limit to the topics you can talk about.
However, there are some topics or subjects that are best not spoken about, especially on the first date, as it could easily lead to arguments and likely hurt feelings.
If you ever expect to get a second date, hurt feelings are usually not an indication that you're a sure bet for date number two.
So avoid the above topics on the first date, and maybe keep them for a later date (like the fourth or fifth date...
or the honeymoon!)
