How to Choose Sound Equipment

    • 1). Define your objective in music; make it as specific as possible. Do you want this equipment to merely meet your needs, or do you want it to be top of the line? How often do you plan on using this equipment? What do you need to know in order to be informed about the product? What kind of budget do you have? Paul Brennan of Elevation Music recommends you place yourself into one of the following categories: hobbyist, semi-pro or professional. These helpful questions and categories will allow you to clarify your needs and narrow your search.

    • 2). Write down what types of equipment you specifically need. Do you need sound boards, microphones, amplifiers or something else? Be sure to include how many units or what quantity of the equipment you want, along with specific traits you desire. If you want some microphones for a drum set, for example, you might write down that you need a microphone for the high hat, snare, toms and kick drum. In addition, it would be helpful to note that you would likely need a heavy-duty dynamic microphone instead of the more fragile ribbon type.

    • 3). Ask around to see if you have knowledgeable friends or family members who may be familiar with the product you are seeking. If you can't find anyone, travel to a local music store and ask the managers. They should be experts in the products they offer.

    • 4). Test the equipment before buying it. Try to become familiar with it and all of its features, and be sure to ask about specifics or details you may not be aware of.

    • 5). Compare the specific product you are looking to purchase with other brands. Try different versions, models and makes to see if the price and quality differences are enough to influence your decision. Try them out if at all possible and hold off judgment until you do. Be sure to shop around online as well, though it pays to test the equipment before you buy it. Don't disregard used equipment---give it a chance to prove itself before you write it off based on appearance.
