The 2010 edition of the Melbourne cup is significant and a new record in itself.
It will be the 150th time the race has been undertaken, first happening in 1841.
The race holds a great deal of historical and cultural importance for Australian's, therefore its important to acknowledge the various records that have been accomplished by individual, race horses or groups of people throughout the years.
The horse with the most wins in 'Makybe Diva', winning in the consecutive years 2003, 2004 and 2005.
Other horses with a notable amount of victories include 'Think Big' with victories in 1974 and 1975, 'Rain Lover' winning in 1968 and 1969, 'Peter Pan' in 1932 and 1934 and 'Archer' in 1861 and 1862.
'Peter Pan' is the only horse with two wins that were not in consecutive years and another point of interest is the years in which 'Archer' accomplished his victories, being the 1st and 2nd time the race took place.
In regards to jockeys, both Bobby Lewis and Harry White have the same amount of victories.
Lewis being successful in the years 1902, 1915, 1919 and 1927.
White on the other hand had victories later on in the years 1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979.
The most successful trainer is by far Bart Cummings, having the winning horse on 12 separate occasions (1965, 1966, 1967, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1990, 1991, 1996, 1999 and 2008).
Etienne de Mestre and Lee Freedman are other successful trainers that each had 5 victories to their name and achieved their results around the same time as Cummings career.
