How to Chip & Putt

    Chip

    • 1). Gauge how far it is from the tee, where you hit the ball, to the hole. The distance should be marked nearby. Keep this in mind.

    • 2). Figure how much loft (height) you will need to get on the green--the location of the hole. If the hole is downhill from the tee, you will need less and vice versa.

    • 3). To get more loft, place the club head behind the ball so you will be hitting the ball with the upward motion of your swing. Placing the ball on top of a "tee" (a small tool with a pointed end that is inserted into the ground where the ball sits) can help give you more loft.

    • 4). Position your feet. Your feet should be as wide as your shoulders. To get more loft, set your feet so the ball is in the middle of your stance.

    • 5). Try to swing through the ball and only use as much power as necessary to get the ball to the green. Keep your head down and don't force a swing with excess power. Your swing should be a flowing motion.

    • 6). Getting out of a sand trap is difficult but not impossible. Place your club an inch or two behind the ball to increase loft. Don't swing too hard.

    Putt

    • 1). Gauge how the green slopes by kneeling and looking at how the ground lies in the direction from your ball to the hole.

    • 2). Hit the ball towards the hole, but keep in mind how the green slopes. If it is sloping to the left, hit your ball slightly to the left so the slope will carry the ball into the hole.

    • 3). Putt with a minimum of force. Using too much force can cause the ball to go off the green or miss the hole.

    • 4). Hold the putter loosely and let your shoulders swing easily.
